HPV and Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers that affect a woman's reproductive organs. Globally, cervical cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Half of cervical cancer cases occur in women aged between 35 and 55.





Cervical cancer is a malignant cancer of the cervix uteri or cervical area. It has been found that the Human Papilomavirus (HPV) Infection is a the cause for approximately 70% all cervical cancer. Though HPV is recognized as the reason behind most cases of cervical cancer, there are other factors that play important roles in the cause and progression of cervical cancer, these include; numerous sex partners over a period of time; this increases the chance of HPV infection, the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases, weak immune system, which reduces the ability of the body to fight the virus, early sexual activity, as non-matured cells of the cervix are more likely to succumb to viral infection, and sometimes, cigarette smoking, though this has not been conclusively established.





The most common symptoms of cervical cancer include pelvic pain or pain during intercourse, unexpected vaginal discharge or bleeding, increase in the frequency of urination etc. However, the occurrence of these symptoms doesn???t necessarily imply cervical cancer.





Cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy in women worldwide, and it remains a leading cause of cancer-related death for women in developing countries. Cervical cancers usually affects women of middle age or older, but it may be diagnosed in any reproductive-aged woman. Cervical tumors are classified as either preinvasive where the lower third of the epithelium contains abnormal cells, or invasive in which the full thickness of the epithelium contains abnormally proliferating cells.





Avoid Getting HPV: HPV stands for Human Pappilovirus. This virus is transmitted through sex and results in genital warts. These warts can turn into precancerous growth or cancer. It has been seen that nearly all women get cervix cancer because of HPV infection. You can avoid getting HPV by using protection, not having multiple sex partners and not having sex at an early age.





There is no singular factor that we can say that it is the principal cause or the main factor that is responsible for the cancer of the cervix. However, there are some factors that appear to increase the risk of developing this cancer of the cervix. The main factor that we can point to that increases the risk of the cancer of the cervix is what we refer to as human papilloma virus.





Some other things that you need to avoid in order to avoid getting cervix cancer would be smoking. People who do not smoke have a way reduced risk of getting cervix cancer. Not only that, but you will have a lower risk of getting any kind of cancer. The main thing to note here is that you need to avoid anything that can cause cancer.
